Getting there

There is no road to Mukut

Ferry from Mersing or Tanjung Gemok to Tioman's west coast, then a sea taxi round the south coast to Mukut — or the coastal trail on foot. Some parties have kayaked from Juara.

Mumbar, Bagus and Batu Sirau are reached from the Nipah side, along the Nipah–Tunamaya concrete path and then jungle trails.

The checkpoint system

The Nenek Semukut hiking trail out of Mukut is marked with numbered checkpoints. Every approach in this guidebook is described against them.

• CP5 — branch for Batu Naga and Damai Sentosa
• CP7 — branch for Polish Princess, Sam Sam, Naga, Freebird, Puncak Anak
• CP9 — far side; the Naga line is visible from here
• CP4–CP5 — base camp with water

Season

When to go

• March–April and August are the settled windows
• South faces bake after 1 pm — start before dawn
• The steepest routes need two dry days to come into condition
• Monsoon roughly November–February: heavy rain, rough seas, ferries can stop

Style & safety

What to expect

Long runouts, some loose rock, mixed bolted and natural protection, jungle pitches to the summit, and committing abseil descents frequently finished in the dark.

Anchors are being re-equipped over time, but older routes may still be "one bolt plus old tat". Helmets. Careful rope management.
